The Story of Riffel Ranch

Darrel Riffel, a life-long resident of Oklahoma, was the proprietor of JB’s Steakhouse until his retirement.  Due to his retirement, JB’s eventually closed.  JB’s Steakhouse was an institution in the cow town of Woodward, Oklahoma where steaks and other meats are a staple in most meals.  It was in business for almost 50 years serving hand-cut steaks, chicken, seafood and other meats to patrons from all around the Region.  What made JB’s a local favorite was its seasonings.  Darrel developed a unique seasoning he referred to as “Magic Dust” from spices used to feed cowboys, cowhands and other Western icons from the time Oklahoma was an Indian Territory to present day.  Magic Dust gave JB’s meats and vegetables that distinctive taste which made JB’s famous.

Darrel had the privilege of serving his Magic Dust to his most important customers being locals throughout Northwest Oklahoma, Western Texas and Southwestern Kansas.  However, several other celebrities sought out and enjoyed the flavor of Magic Dust over the years.  Darrel was asked to serve and did serve the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, and Laura Bush while he was in office.  He also had the privilege of serving Tom Osborne, University of Nebraska head football coach, College Football Hall of Fame member and former United States Congressman.

RCA recording artist, County Music Hall of Fame, Gospel Hall of Fame and Grammy award wining group the Oaks Ridge Boys enjoyed the Magic Dust.  Additionally, Darrel had the opportunity to serve his Magic Dust to Heiman trophy winner, 10-time NFL All-Pro football player, 4-time NFL rushing leader and NFL Hall of Fame member, Barry Sanders.  The actors and staff of the NBC television series “Unsolved Mysteries” liked the Magic Dust so much they made sure to have Darrel cater their events when in Oklahoma.

Dallas Cowboys Ed “Too-Tall” Jones, Drew Pearson, Robert Newhouse, Tony Hill and Ron Fellows all dined at JB’s enjoying Darrel's Magic Dust.  Others who have enjoyed Magic Dust is legendary 3-time Emmy award winner, Edward R. Murrow winner and Oklahoma Hall of Fame weather broadcaster, Gary England. Four Oklahoma Governors (Governor Stitt, Governor Fallon, Governor Bellman and Governor Nigh), two United States Senator from Oklahoma (Senator Inhofe and Senator Coburn) and countless dignitaries have all enjoyed his Magic Dust.

Riffel Ranch, LLC has preserved the Magic Dust recipe for all to enjoy.  In addition to meats and vegetables, customers have used Magic Dust as a general seasoning in eggs, casseroles and other foods.
